ABOUT WORLD PRESS PHOTO EXHIBITION

Each year World Press Photo invites press photographers throughout the world to participate in the World Press Photo contest, the premier annual international competition in press photography.

The overall prize, the World Press Photo of the Year, is awarded for the single photograph that represents an issue, situation or event of great journalistic importance, and does so in a way which demonstrates an outstanding level of visual perception and creativity. It has come to be regarded as the most prestigious award for photojournalism in the world.

After the contest, which is held in Amsterdam, the prize-winning photographs are assembled into a traveling exhibition that is visited by over a million people in 40 countries.

It is the only international event of this stature, not simply bringing together pictures from all parts of the globe but also reflecting trends and developments in photojournalism, and revealing how the press gives us the news.

The Rotary Club of Auckland has secured the rights to bring the exhibition to Auckland with the vision that it will become a destination date on the annual calendar helping to stimulate world understanding, the transfer of knowledge, and the development of photojournalism.

The Rotary Club of Auckland is one of New Zealand’s oldest and largest community groups, comprising of captains of industry and community leaders. The club is known for establishing and running the Ellerslie Flower Show as well as an immense number of trusts such as the Stroke Foundation, the Institute of the Blind and Youth Town.

Proceeds from entry fees will be donated to charity and will be managed for the benefit of these charities by the trustee of the Rotary Club of Auckland Foundation.
